Mom, It’s Time to Break Out of Your Style Rut

PROBLEM: Mom of active kiddos stuck in a style rut.

SYMPTOMS: Mom wearing the same thing every day: jeans or sweat pants and t-shirt or sweatshirt. Many times the offender, aka Mom, is caught wearing clothes other than her own – sometimes even those belonging to Dad. Mom may be heard saying she is bored with everything in her closet and has nothing to wear. In not-so-rare cases, Mom might even say she doesn’t have the time or energy to think about what she is wearing.

SOLUTION: Get out of the style rut with a style renewal!

It’s an age old problem: a mom (or any woman for that matter) gets stuck into a style rut. It seems like it happens suddenly; one minute she is the pillar of style and the next she looks in the mirror and is shocked by the reflection. It happens to all of us. The real test of a fashionista is what we do in that moment!

When you realize you’re stuck in a style rut, you have a choice to do one of two things. You can either give up, or embrace the fact you need a change and press on to improve yourself. And ladies, let’s face it; when we know we look great, we feel great. This is important in making us the best mom, wife, friend, employee and best woman we can be.

Although it seems like taking time to focus on ourselves seems selfish, it’s the exact opposite. We do this for the people in our lives that we care about. In order for your family to get the best from you, you need to feel good about yourself!

Convinced? If so, here’s how you can get out of your style rut!

Evaluate your style

What do you like and what don’t you like about your current style? Maybe you’ve let your hair go to your natural color, or maybe you’ve embraced your God-given curls and love them. Don’t change those things. Changing the reflection in the mirror is a big deal. And even if the changes are positive, it’s still a big deal. The most important thing about your style is that it is a true representation of who you are. So, think about it. What do you like, and what don’t you like?

What it is about your current style (wardrobe) that bothers you?
Is it that you look undone every day? Maybe you feel like you have nothing to wear when you look at your closet? Perhaps it is even as simple as a weight gain / loss, and now you really have no idea what looks good on you. Write those things down and think of them like New Year’s Resolutions.

Go through some magazines

Start going through magazines and catalogs. Pull out the pages showing a style (or piece of clothing) you like. Look for items on the pages that catch your eye like the color and style of a piece of clothing or maybe just a handbag or necklace in an ad. When you need inspiration for an outfit, pull out the magazine clippings. This will also help you start building a “to buy” list.

Go through your closet and take out all of your favorite pieces

Do you see some similarity between the pieces you love and the pictures you pulled out of the magazines? My hunch is yes. The similarity may be in color, style, detail or cut. Use these pieces as the foundation to transform the rest of your wardrobe.

Think about your world and your calendar

What activities do you need clothing for? Is it activities at church, time with friends or the kids, social events? If all of the things on your calendar are casual type events, then don’t fret about needing a little black dress. Start by building a solid everyday wardrobe and style you love!

Here are a few quick tips for ways to take your style problems and turn them into a style solution!

PROBLEM SOLUTION
Too many t-shirts and jeans Start small. Get some nicer tees and pair them with a cardigan. Instant style change! Need a little more? Do a shoe check. Dump the athletic shoes and opt for a ballet flat.
Nothing fits Get a babysitter and mark out a morning or afternoon to spend in a dressing room. Gather up some things you like, maybe a few tees, a cardigan, jacket and some jeans and dress pants. And don’t forget a skirt! Take several sizes in the dressing room with you. Remember, everything can be altered to fit you perfectly!
Completely bored with everything in my closet Take a fresh look at everything in your closet. Vow to wear what you normally wear but in a different way. For example, if you always wear that shirt with those pants, try that shirt with jeans and a statement necklace. Bring in accessories to your new wardrobe combinations, and you will soon see that you have so many new options. How can you be bored?!
