Lucky Ducky

My brother and I have the best babysitter in the entire world! He’s kind and funny; he plays with us and tells us great stories. We never know what to expect when we get home from school. Our babysitter is our Grandpa named Ducky. He says he loves his job so much; we should call him Lucky Duck!
One day Bobby and I came home from school in a bad mood. “Why the long faces?” asked Grandpa Ducky.
“We both got in trouble, even though Bobby started it,” I said.
“Can you tell me what happened?” asked Grandpa Ducky.
“Bobby took my notebook, so I hit him and he hit me back. We had to stay inside at recess to finish our art projects, but we didn’t finish because it was hard to concentrate when we could hear our friends outside. Now our projects aren’t done, and it’s a special project for Mama!” I said.
“Well,” said Grandpa Ducky, “that’s too bad. It’s not ok to fight, but I know something that might make you feel better. Go look at what I’ve got in the kitchen.”
We ran to see what Grandpa Ducky had in store for us today. It was a table full of supplies from the craft store. We were so happy we were going to be able to finish our projects for Mama, so we went straight to work. When Grandpa Ducky went to get some paint, everything was going smoothly. When he returned, it was quite a different scene!
Bobby had rested his elbow on the glue which had then squirted all over me, making me jump. I happened to be holding an open bottle of glitter. Now we had glue and glitter all over the table--AND me! When Grandpa Ducky came to help, he tripped and ended up spilling the paint on Bobby’s head! What a mess!
It was almost time for Mama to get home, and we had a lot to do. We had to finish our projects, clean up the table and clean up ourselves! When we were finished, Bobby and I were as clean as whistles and had two beautiful pieces of artwork for our Mama. I said, “I bet Mama’s going to love these! I bet she’s going to give us one of her big squeezy hugs!”
Bobby smiled and said, “I bet you’re right!”
We were anxiously waiting for Mama to get home. When she walked in the door, we were holding our projects and looking proud as punch. Mama grinned, said thank you and gave us one of her famous big squeezy hugs! I whispered, “I told you so” to Bobby and we both smiled.
If it wasn’t for Grandpa Ducky we wouldn’t have been able to finish our art projects. Grandpa Ducky says he’s a Lucky Duck, but I think Bobby and I are the lucky ones! He says he loves his job, but we love him more.
