A Hawaiian Luau in Your Own Backyard
As I’m writing this, flights from South Bend Regional Airport to Honolulu, Hawaii, are about $900 per person. WOW! With the economic climate this summer, that kind of price will certainly ground a lot of us. But don’t despair! You can have a Hawaiian “staycation” by hosting a luau party right here in Michiana! Here’s how to do it:
Luaus are a hot party theme this year! Stores like the Dollar Tree, Target, Wal-Mart and Target have all kinds of luau themed items, so start there!
Invitations: To save postage and paper, purchase a bag of leis (available at party supply stores or Dollar Tree), and create an invitation on your home computer (or by hand). Punch a hole in the top of the invitation and attach it to the lei, then hand deliver the invitations. You can invite friends and family to “getaway to Hawaii without leaving Michiana.”
Décor: Your first stop should be a discount store like Dollar Tree or Family Dollar. You can pick up all kinds of tropical items that make GREAT decorations.

I made this centerpiece with T-shirt can holders and kids’ flip-flops from the Dollar Tree along with a bag of flower petals from OrientalTrading.com. These make great favors, too!
