Eye Site Exams - Frequently Asked Questions:
What should I expect at my eye exam?
•A review of your history and family history
•An evaluation of vision at both distance and near.
This may be with and with out correction.
•Determination of accurate prescription. This will be done with a machine called a phoropter. The doctor will show you a series of lens choices to determine the most accurate glasses prescription.
•Evaluation of eye teaming and eye movements.
•External and internal eye health evaluation. This lets the doctor look for cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, corneal changes and diabetic eye disease as well as other ocular disease.
◦To test for glaucoma we use a yellow eye drop that numbs the eye and makes the eyelids feel a little heavy. Then a blue light is used to evaluate the eye pressure. This doesn’t involve a puff of air and is not the same as dilating the eye.
◦The dilation is an additional eye drop placed in the eye that enlarges the pupil. The dilation drops take about twenty minutes to work and make things up close blurry and lights bright for about three to four hours. Some people have a hard time driving after the dilation. You may want to bring sunglasses or have a driver available to drive you home after the dilation. The dilation allows the doctor to get the best view of the back of the eye (the retina).
•If you are a contact lens patient there will also be an evaluation of the curvature of the eye.
How often should I get an eye exam?
Most people should have a comprehensive eye exam every two years. If you are a contact lens wearer, under the age of 18 or diabetic you should have an eye exam every year.
What should I bring to the eye exam?
•Insurance information
•Most recent glasses and/or contact lens boxes and/or prescription.
•Any prescriptions that you take including any over the counter medication or supplements
•Any questions that you may have for the doctor, especially if you are interested in Lasik or contact lenses.
I see well, why should I get an eye exam?
A comprehensive eye examination not only checks for a glasses prescription but also the complete health of the eye.
How old do you have to be to wear contact lenses?
There are no age limits. Most children can successfully wear contact lenses at about age eight or as soon as your child is responsible enough to wear and properly care for contact lenses. Parents, patients and the eye doctor will discuss and decide when contacts are appropriate.
